Subaru 4WD Club of QLD
29th Birthday Party and Detailing Day
16th and 17th of August 2008
Another year has passed and the club is another year older.
Luke and I travel down to Brisbane from Bundaberg on the Friday, so we could have a good sleep before the celebration on Saturday night. We arrived at the club house around 2:30pm Saturday, just prior to the starting of the scavenger hunt. Jan explained the rules and what some of the items on the list meant. The scavengers had three hours to collect their items and return to the club house, those that were late would be penalized. Some of the items on the list that they had to collect were a dead toad, a snail, a match stick, the smallest fuel receipt, the fattest wallet, a business card from Zupps, a macadamia nut, the largest pair of undies, photo of the tram tracks, photo of the city cat, a photo of a bus driver waving at you, plus many more weird and wonderful things. Once the scavengers returned to the club house there were a few more games to play to earn some more points. Some of the scavenger teams joined in to play peg face, sing the Subaru song and to an impersonation of another club member.
So at 3:00pm the race was on. If my memory serves me right I think Cammo and his partner were the first out of the parking lot with Dave Martin and Dwayne bringing up the rear. Luke and I did not participate in the hunt and we stay behind with a few of the others that also were not joining in. Around 4:30pm we were joined but a few more members of the Frazer Coast crew that had travel down that day. We watched some 4WD DVDs, while we waited for the scavengers to return. The hunters started rolling in about 5:45pm and they all had returned by the 6:00pm deadline. The scavenger hunt games were played and then the points were tallied. With the scavenger hunt done the nibbles were served, the music went on and the club members enjoyed a drink and a catch up with other members. Dave Martins freshly painted ugly was a good conversation starter. A bomb fire was started to keep us all warm. The BBQ went on and we all enjoyed a good feed of steak, sausage and salad. With dinner done and our belly’s full, we all went in side for the awards presentation. The winners are as follows:
Scavenger hunt Grant & Kim Rogers
Out Standing Contribution Brett & Megan Rogers
Club Man of the year Jan Kancelarczyk
Club woman of the year Megan Rogers
Club Man runner up Dave Gibson
Club woman runner up Cherie Mullaly
Best new city member Tom Semple
Best country member Stephen Curry
The Black Hole Award Gaven McGrath
Spit the Dummy Award Curlie
Loose Nuts Award Darren Woods
Launching Award Tom Semple
The Outback Award Bryan Neilsen
After the awards it was time for desert. A few sat in the club room to watch DVDs, while others headed back outside to the fire to keep warm. After a while all the party goers headed home leaving those that were camping at the club room for the night.
We woke on Sunday to a beautiful clear day. Perfect weather to clean and do mechanically repairs on the cars. Those that had stay at the club room were up nice and early. Luke and I didn’t arrive until about 11:00am so we missed the early action. Dave Gibson fixed the wiring on Dwayne’s brumby while Jan took to Steven Nean’s car with a grinder to do some panel beating to make his wheel arches larger for his bigger tyres. Jan also did some panel work on Luke’s chrome tail gate strip, while Dave Martin polished a Toyota Camry??. We all enjoyed ham and salad sandwiches for lunch then it was back to working on the cars. Once the vehicles were all clean, they were lined up for some photos. From there members started heading home, leaving a few of us to pack up and clean the club room.
There was a good turn up for both days and I believe that everyone had a good time. Thank you to Dave M, Jan, Ray Lyons and to everyone else that help organize the party. Luke and I are both looking forward to the big 30th birthday bash next year.
Cherie Mullay.
