Sunshine Coast Hinterland
August 29, 2004
This is a sad story about a guy who was out 4WDing
with the Suby club one nice and sunny Sunday up to the Sunshine Coast hinterland
(Maleny) and was, upon putting a little scratch in the front bumper bar when
parking for lunch, got himself in to a whole lot of trouble from his girl friend
and got a trip report to do of the day and the things that happened.
Now as this was a LITTLE Scratch, so this should also be a little trip report,
let me tell you some of the things that happened that day and how I got the job.
We were all at the meeting spot on time. I was in my partner Chris’ 98 Outback
and her Dad and Mum (who have also recently joined the club) were there as well
in their L300 4WD van. I will try to remember those who were there; there were
18 cars in all so I will probably miss someone: Greg & Kathy in their new 2001
Liberty sedan as Trip Leader, David Martin in his near new Forester, Camo in his
Liberty, Bruce & Pam Ottway in their Liberty, Christine Barry in her Forester,
Bryan in his RX, Jan Watts and her Mum in her Forester, Ron & Glenys Penfold in
a Challenger, Albert Hill & Wife in an L series wagon and son in a GT Forester,
and Big John in his Rodeo. As for the other 6 cars I don’t know them by name,
but we had a good turn out with some new people along.
It was not long after we left that David got a fine for not knowing his left
from his right. After some more turns Chris was in the wrong gear at a hill and
after a couple of tries we were off again. Soon we were at a steep dirt rocky
hill which (I’m being nice here) Chris did not like the look of it one bit.
About a car’s length up was enough for her, so it was up to me to drive up this
bit so I gladly slid behind the wheel and showed her how it was done, picked all
the right lines and did not touch once.
There was a bit more dirt after this with some deep holes where an unlifted
Outback has to pick a line. At one point Camo said on the radio that he had
touched somewhere, well Chris did a good job for first time off road and she did
not touch were Camo did - give her a lift kit and look out.
We went on to Mt Mee then on to Woodford for morning tea with a couple of stops
along the way as the convoy rules broke down and we were too spread out, so we
had to do a regroup now and then.
When we were leaving I was lucky enough to be told I could drive for a while.
“Yippee, cool,” I thought!!! So I drove until we stopped for lunch at Maleny
where, upon parking the car, I just lightly bumped a post and scratched a little
tiny bit of paint (off the bumper bar that was only painted 2 days before)
trying to make sure the cars behind could get past us as the car park was very
full. And that’s how come I got the job doing this trip report.
After we all had a nice lunch and a pit stop and some photos we were off again.
I was no longer allowed to be behind the wheel and think it will be some time
before I am allowed to again.
This time we were going to Montville and down the Obi Obi range to Kenilworth
and a stop at the cheese factory where I think we all got an ice-cream and some
cheese, then it was time to go again.
This time we were off for a nice country drive to Conondale; we then took a
right turn back to Woodford which was where Chris’s Dad & Mum said goodbye.
It was along this road we came upon a very steep hill with woe boys. (I think it
was dirt last time I went up it). Some of us were back to 2nd gear low range to
get up it. We then had some more dirt road which the big boys had some fun
flicking the back of the cars out on the turns.
We were soon at the turn off to Kilcoy, which is where we along with some others
said our goodbyes and went home. I then had to wash the car, Chris’s way of
getting back at me. The rest went on to Wivenhoe Dam then on to Esk then back to
Brisbane.
It was a good day and I think we all had fun, and it was also good to see some
new members, and some would be members. Thanks for a good trip Greg.
