Lawn Bowls

September 26 2004

Greg and I arrived slightly after 12, running slightly late. I prefer ten-pin bowling; I had never tried lawn bowls before. Participants, Greg Bryant, trip leader. Dave Martin, Ron and Glenys Penfold, Bruce Ottway, Christine Barry, Gaven McGrath, Jan Watt, new member Larry Krause and myself. The meeting place was Merthyr Bowls Club on Oxlade Street at New Farm.

Greg had booked our lunch for 3pm, but one of the workers asked if we would mind having lunch a little earlier, we didn’t complain.

After lunch it was time to commence bowling. After some tuition from one of the staff we were off. The bowls are biased one way, with the weight being on the side with the smaller emblem. We split into 2 groups of 4 people. As there were 10 of us bowling, one from each end would sit out after a few bowls.

I received the trip report because the first bowl of mine was a wrong bias, and ended up in the next rink. (It wasn’t going to be the last.)

After a few ends most people were getting the hang of it, but still not me. I either bowled with too much weight, or didn’t take into account the bias of the bowl. Give me ten-pin bowling any day.

All in all, a great day was had by all. What a beautiful spot to spend a couple of hours on Sunday, and the view was spectacular.
