Mt Mee State Forest
14 January 2001
Well hello Suba-holics and others. It's been quite some time since I have done a trip report and a lot of members have come and gone in the meantime which means a lot of you won't know who the hell I am.
Anyway, lots of things have happened to me since my last good drive. Not least an operation on my left shoulder that has severely restricted my driving but I never give up and always have plan B, C etc. I want to visit the Victorian high country after Easter. This is the plan if I get away with the Mt. Mee trip without too much pain and discomfort. "I did". I will go on the Burrum Coast Woodgate trip so if that goes alright, I'll do the high country for 2 weeks in April. So much for the intros and why fors. Now to the Mt Mee trip.
We had to get up at 5.3pam NSW time to get to Burpengary in time - not a problem, I love early starts, my brain does, but my body does not. Anyway, we arrived early with enough time for coffee. Dave was last as usual Some things never change. That started Big John whinging and Maryke laughed all day as Big John told Dave what to do over the C.B. She thinks they should get married because they act like an old married couple. John says what he thinks and Dave does what he likes. You have to love them.
Back to the trip. The track from Burpengary to Dayboro was new for me and quite enjoyable, as was the breakfast at the Bush Barbie. it was good to see the support of members and old faces and new who came for the breakfast alone but didn't go on the rest of the drive. Ricky and others would rather watch cricket than drive. "Strange People".
After breakfast it was off to Mt. Mee State Forest and heaps and heaps of dust. Nothing much has changed there apart from a very short interesting climb that Dave, John S and I drove. As usual Dave made it look easy and the Defender had no trouble but John's B.F.G. muddies didn't give him the traction he wanted. But he didn't give up and got to the top with help from you guessed it, Dave. What a lovely bunch of people in the Suba Club.
As usual those that didn't want to drive the hard bit walked back to watch and lend support and encouragement. Phil W was carrying great lumps of wood and rocks for wheel chocks etc.
We had a pleasant stop at the Gantry for lunch. Again Phil was a Good Samaritan when some day trippers asked for help with a flat tyre. After lunch it was off through the dust to the rock hole for a pleasant swim. Then more dust to another swimming hole and camping area for afternoon tea where we stirred Kathy up about how hard the next part of the trip would be. Then another long dusty drive into the sun to the interesting part of the trip. Kathy did it with ease, then on Kathy's suggestion we went to some very pleasant pub who's name escapes me (that happens a lot nowadays) and had a couple of beers etc. before going our separate ways.
I would like to thank Dave M, Big John, Ron P, Kathy B, Graeme and Julie L, Peter A, Andrew G, Ken D, Phil W, John S and Chris L for a very enjoyable day. See you at Woodgate.
