Condomine Gorge

6 August 2000

Cheryl and I set off early in our Touring wagon for the drive to Boonah to meet other members of the Subaru club. We had a leisurely drive through Beaudesert. The other members on the trip were: Greg and Kathy in the Mazda, Andrew in the Outback, Dave M in his Forester GT, new members Ken and Margaret in their Forester, Ben in his Forester, Big John in the Pie Van, Gaven in his Brumby, Rikki in his MY wagon, Dave and Donalda in their MY, with trip leader Nikko and his son in a Nissan Pathfinder. We arrived at the meeting spot a little early, but that was just so that we could have a chat about the different machinery.

Around 9:30 we set off. This was our first club run. We soon got off sealed roads, onto the dirt. We stopped for a bit of morning tea after about an hour of quite enjoyable driving. The scenery is beautiful in that part of the country. I had a bit of a moment on one of the corners as the back end of the wagon wanted to come around and lead - and talking to Ben he also had difficulties on the same corner.

After morning tea we set off again, and started to get into the steeper parts of the track. This is where the better-equipped and faster vehicles left Cheryl and me behind. We were trying to keep up, but we just kept seeing clouds of dust.

We caught up again when Gaven and Rikki thought that they would go exploring off the regular track. But when they discovered the going too tough and boggy we continued on the same track. This is where I had some car troubles. (Note to self: You can't start automatics in gear.)

We stopped off for lunch at Queen Mary Falls. I found out that my thermos didn't bounce. So no coffee for me. Some of the more willing participants of the day did the six kilometre walk down to see the falls, but 1 decided to stay in the picnic grounds.

After lunch, the driving got even better - 12 water splashes to go through. I had a ball going through them.

When we got back to sealed roads we said our goodbyes and headed home, although some of the group continued on to the start of Spicer's Gap.

All in all it was a very enjoyable day, and I can't wait for the Condamine Gorge trip to come up again this year.
