Avoiding Rust
General Areas
Some of the main areas where rust can occur on all models are the bottoms of the front radiator support panel, doors, sills, tail gates, under car rails and other inner or double panels around the car. The problems start to occur when the drain holes become blocked with a build up of dirt. Also these drain holes around the car can be blocked off by being bent, during off road driving.
These holes should be regularly cleaned by pushing wire or a small sharp tool through the holes. Other areas that should be checked are the bottoms of the front guards, behind the plastic guard liner, around the rear mud guards especially where the fuel filter pipe comes through into the guard. Also check any other double panels or crevasses around the car. The cover of the valance panel at the base of the windscreen should be regularly removed and checked for blockages.
Model by Model
Early L Series - These models have a problem with their under body rails and floor area.
MY Series - Their front windscreen drain holes can become blocked and start to cause problems. These drain holes are placed just in from the bottom of the A pillars. If the screen ever needs replacing the small rubber grommets around these drain holes should be removed to increase their size. On MY Brumbys the panel at the rear where the fog lights (for overseas markets) are fitted collects dirt, also the inner panels along the load area have the same problem.
L Series - If their front windscreen has ever been replaced and the job was not done professionally i.e wrong sealant used, or the body paint was scratched when the screen was removed, problems will occur under the chrome finish strip. The plastic valance panel should be resealed back in place as water can leak into the cabin and cause problems with the interior fan motor.
