Noisy Lifters EA82 Motor
Noisy tappets on some EA82 motors is seen to be a problem as it can occur at any mileage. As the tappets are operated by oil pressure, they cannot be adjusted manually. The solution seems to be not replacing the lifters (an expensive exercise) and the word is they will last well over 200,000km, if there is regular servicing. The problem is the oil becomes aerated by small air leaks in the engine, also the thickness of the oil has an effect, using Castrol TXT or equivalent grade and genuine Subaru oil filter can help. The best fix is a combination of renewing the oil pump and camshaft 'O' rings, with age and wear they become hard and flat, also the oil pump pressure is increased. Then it's time for a short hard test drive in third gear at say 5,000rpm, to bleed the air out of the system and pump the lifters up. The seals around the dip stick and oil filter should be checked for a tight fit.
