Noisy Lifters 1985-on OHC Motors

After suffering noisy lifters for some three years (at start up and idle) at 89,000kms, while changing the timing belts, I decided to try an experiment that I had read or heard about-somewhere and still seems to be successfully working at 142,000kms, five years- later.

The process

Remove all equipment to access lifters: ie camshafts covers, belts etc. Remove lifters and place one at a time in 100mm vice and compress ends to max compression and release until little or no compression is felt: ie 1-5 times. Then replace in motor.

This process has been well worth the effort from my point of view as I was changing the timing belts anyway and has saved me the cost of replacing or having the job done by a professional.

I hope this information may be helpful to anyone who has a similar problem.
