Fitting Fog or Spot Lights to the Bumper Bar of Foresters

If you want to fit after market lights into the holes provided behind the bumper covers in the Forester, this is the easiest and cheapest way. Otherwise, the high priced optional factory kit costs over $300.

The parts you will need are spotlights (no more than 55 watt bulbs) or fog lights, with a diameter of 150mm. All the necessary wiring is already there, so all you will need are 4 Scotch Press Together clips, a genuine relay from a Forester or current Liberty, and a genuine Forester or Impreza (post 1997) 5 pin dash switch cover, The relay is very small and fits straight into the fog light spot provided in the relay' fuse holder on the LHS under the bonnet.  For the 9 pin dash switch cover, you will need to work out which 2 wires out of the 5 to use. The light mounting bracket is plastic, depending on the type of light you buy and an earth wire may need to be fitted to the light steel mounting bracket using the Press Together clips. Connect the light's power to the car's white with-black-stripe wire and the light's earth wire to the car's black wire. Carefully remove the blank switch cover next to the Cruise Control switch using a flat blade screw driver. The spot light plug is already fitted into the blank cover, connect the plug into the switch and you should have light.
